Wedding Expo | Phocused by Darryl | Kernersville

Last weekend we were privileged to participate in a wedding expo at the amazing Barn at Heritage Farm in Dobson, NC. I met the owners, John & Jessica a while back at a networking event here in Kernersville. After brief introductions, we talked at length about business, schedules, and our kids. This couple's amazing journey to bring about such a wonderful venue is without question to be commended. The hard work that they've put into it is so evident.

The Barn has a terrific view of Pilot Mountain. They're very close to finishing the Barn and I can't wait to see the finished product. In attendance at the Expo there were over 30 vendors from across our state ranging from hair stylists to caterers. My booth "neighbor" was a florist. Dawn & Hannah of Creative Designs Flowers & Gifts were great as we tagged-teamed services between potential clients. They featured some very unique floral arrangements which included a pineapple. That's a new one for me but I liked it.

Food! We all love great tasting grub! Castle Catering brought their delicious meatballs and black bean dip. Now I consider myself a picky eater and was hesitant to try the black bean dip initially, but wow! It was phenomenal. I'd certainly book them for my next event.

The event was a success. Interacting with couples from across the state and showcasing my work was key. I was glad to make several connections with other vendors. That's what Phocused by Darryl wants to do for you - make a connection and create a long lasting memory.

Weddings, engagements, portraits.....let us Phocus on you!

Spring Folly 2016! | Family | Kernersville, NC

This past weekend marked the annual Kernersville Spring Folly, a festival that attracts nearly 25,000 people the first weekend of May. It's a time of food, fun, and fellowship for the entire family to participate in. I decided to take the camera with us as we headed downtown.

We reconnected with Teresa who owns Mama Bass. We were next to each other back in December at a local Holiday Bazaar. She offers unique handbags and hook-n-go totes, as well as a Hug-a-Luv memory bear which I've purchased but I'm waiting on the right moment to give to my son. Oh, and yes it's a Cowboys themed bear. *Smile* You can find Mama Bass on several social media outlets including Etsy, Instagram, and Twitter.

We also met Gene with G and S Gourmet Dips. They offer a wide range of dip flavors that you can make to enjoy. Fiesta Supreme and Bacon Cheddar were some of our favorites. The great thing about his dips were that they could be used for food, fruit, and even dessert. Tired of the same old dip from the grocery stores? Give G and S a try. Check out their Facebook Group

We had an awesome time this year at the Spring Folly. This was the first time I was able to visit the festival each day. I want to also shout out the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce for doing a fine job with advertising. If you looking for a great time with small town vibes, please check out the Spring Folly in 2017.

Phocused on fun...

Lending a paw... | Family | Kernersville

Everyone needs a hand every now and then. In this instance it was a paw for the last 7 years. Over the weekend Laker, our Yorkie, passed away. He was the perfect listener and always loved on us. I loved that tiny, 4 pound phenom so much! It's been a tough few days as we're still grieving but I couldn't help to think about the impact he had in our lives. Even better was the impact he had on so many lives. The outpouring of love we received via text, calls, and social media was enormous. We'll certainly miss that little fella.

Last night I found myself driving through a fairly empty parking lot headed to the store. Something caught my eye - a quick blur. As I approached the building I noticed there was a dog running around the lot. I began walking up to the entrance and two other women were walking in the same direction. The beagle ran up to me. It had a tag and I immediately asked the women to assist me in getting the number. The dog, which obviously had been trained, cooperated long enough to allow us to get the number then took off. I called and sent a text hoping someone would answer. Nothing. I drove around the building. The dog was nowhere to be found.

Some would say I was doing too much. Maybe so, but I could only think about what the owner felt. Do they miss their dog? Was that dog a child's best friend? Did he comfort someone and bring them joy? I'll never know. What I do know is that it taught me that we all can take a few minutes out of our day to lend a hand...or someone who may need it. Just a thought for the week.

Laker we'll miss you tremendously and I'm thankful for the memories we had with you.

Phocus on someone else today.

Sous Chef Jai | Family | Kernersville, NC

"Can I help?"

That's usually how my son Jaiven begins his approach in the kitchen. He's such a great helper with any task, but he enjoys seeing things come together in the kitchen. This started a few months ago. Several meals and baked goods later, my wife decided to purchase his own chef outfit from Curious Chef. Over the weekend he made his first German Chocolate Cake from scratch.

"Where are the ingredients?"

So ready to jump the gun with his meals, Sous Chef Jai sometimes wants to throw everything in at once. It's understandable as he can't control his excitement. How about us as adults? Is it normal for us to try to rush the process? Personally, I know at times I try to take on everything at once which I know isn't the best thing to do. Sometimes it's best to just sit, think, and put the ingredients in one by one.

"It's almost finished!"

The excitement that he exhibits while prepping is great. He's so ready for it to be finished that he even watches the oven with great anticipation. Jai understand that he has to wait some time before his food/baked goods are completed. When it's finished, he has the biggest smile. "I helped make a cake for Pop Pop!" As we start off this week, let's keep the thought that the project, deadline, or whatever you're dealing with is almost finished. Hang in there.

Stay phocused my friends...

Devin + Chris | Engagement | Burlington, NC

This E-session was fantastic from start to finish! We had so much fun and I have to admit that Devin and Chris were naturals! Set at Glencoe Mills in Burlington, NC, we were able to capture their love for another and they made it so easy. We photographers always appreciate that. Congratulations to you both and I look forward to shooting your big day next spring!

Ellie | Portrait | Greensboro, NC

I had the honor to work with my longtime friend Ellie. I lose track of time so quickly when I think that 3 short years ago we both started doing photography. I've been fortunate to work together with her on several weddings and other various shoots. They call us "Ebony & Ivory". :-) This shoot took place on the outskirts of the city on a beautiful farm providing an array of backdrops. Ellie, as usual, always does a marvelous job! Have you reached out to let us phocus on you?

Brooke | Senior | Greensboro, NC

Phocused by Darryl Photography had the pleasure of photographing Brooke's senior pictures in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. I've known the 2015 graduate since she was a youngster. I've kept in touch over the years and felt honored when her mother asked us to shoot Brooke's photos. Our shoot was upbeat and she did a great job. Congratulations Brooke! We wish you all the best! If you're looking for senior photos and desire a unique photo shoot you can find us on Facebook at Phocused by Darryl Photography.

Aja | Senior | Greensboro, NC

Recently I was asked by a dear friend if I was able to photograph her sister for her senior pictures. Who I encountered was a lovely young lady full of enthusiasm and drive. Aja is graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I know a thing or two about UNCG seeing that I'm a proud alumni. She'll be obtaining her English Major, American Sign Language (ASL) Minor and Entrepreneurship Minor. That's awesome! We had a blast shooting her photos across campus. Congrats and good luck Aja!
